— Chapter 24 —

I catch up with Mo the first thing Monday morning. “I know what you should do!” I tell him.

Mo looks up from the tar on the playground blacktop. “Good morning to you, too.”

“Mo! You should read your new shopping cart story in the talent show.”

Mo’s face switches to horror, but I press on. “It’s funny! Steve’s a great character.”

He goes back to poking the tar. “I don’t think so.”

“What?” I say. “Why?”

“I don’t know.” He shakes his head. “It isn’t meant to be read by other people.”

“Wait. You’re the one who wants to enter a shopping cart story in the contest. You know that requires people to read it, right?”

Mo presses his lips together and keeps poking.

“Maybe you just need to revise it.”

He looks up at me. “What if it’s an earlier shopping cart story?”

I drop my backpack on the ground. “But we wrote those other ones together. I have my thing. Your thing needs to be all you.”

“But that’s the problem . . .” He trails off.

“It’s going to be great,” I say. “And you’ve got until tomorrow afternoon when they do the second round of auditions. Just revise it tonight or do whatever you need to do to get it ready.”

Mo doesn’t look up, and I sit down on the ground next to him. “You know what you could do to get yourself ready? You could practice reading it aloud. Maya Angelou did that, and hearing the words inspired her.”

“Maybe,” Mo says. “You’ll really wear the tank top if I agree to do the audition?”

“I will,” I say. “I promise.”

Mo swallows. “Okay. I’ll do it. Tomorrow it is.”

We shake on it. Even though Mo looks as terrified as I feel.
